A plasma ball, also known as a plasma globe or plasma lamp, is a device that contains a partially ionized gas, known as plasma, enclosed in a glass sphere. The plasma ball works by using high-frequency, high-voltage alternating current to ionize the gas within the sphere, which creates a spectacular display of colorful arcs of light.

The plasma ball was invented by Nikola Tesla, a renowned inventor and electrical engineer, in the late 19th century. Tesla conducted experiments with high-frequency and high-voltage electricity, and his work led to the development of the plasma ball.

The plasma ball works on the principle of gas discharge. When a high voltage is applied to the gas within the sphere, it ionizes the gas and creates a plasma. The plasma consists of positive ions and free electrons, which move around in the sphere. As the electrons move through the gas, they collide with other atoms and excite them. When the excited atoms return to their ground state, they emit photons, which we see as bright arcs of light.

The color of the arcs depends on the type of gas used in the plasma ball. The most common gas used is neon, which produces a bright orange-red color. Other gases, such as argon, krypton, and xenon, can also be used to produce different colors.

The plasma ball is a popular device used for decoration and entertainment. It is often used in science demonstrations and museums to show the properties of plasma and to explain the principles of gas discharge.

Plasma balls are a great mix of science in action, and mesmerising lighting. This plasma ball has 2 settings - on and audio. It has an in-built microphone, so when you select audio mode, it will turn on and off to any loud noises near by or flash in time with music. Touch it and watch lightning follow your finger as you move it around.

  • Electrical current flows through negatively ionised gas to create the illusion of lightning

  • Reacts to sound
  • Direct to wall power
